Why "Fathom"?
A fathom is the old nautical measure of a sailor's open arms — six feet, used to sound the depth of water below a ship. Ford borrowed the word for the same reason sailors did: to describe something with more underneath it than shows on the surface.

What's actually underneath
Ford has released more engineering detail than styling. Everything in this section comes from Ford directly.
A structural LFP battery
The standard-range pack is a 400-volt lithium iron phosphate battery using a cell-to-pack design, where the prismatic cells act as structural members of the vehicle rather than modules bolted into a separate case. A 48-volt architecture handles low-voltage systems. LFP costs less and tolerates frequent full charging better than nickel-based chemistries — a large part of how the price got where it is.
NACS charging, driver-side rear
Fathom uses a NACS (SAE J3400) port at the driver's-side rear corner — the same connector and roughly the same placement as Tesla's vehicles, so Supercharger stalls should be straightforward rather than an adapter exercise. Ford has not published charging speeds or charge times.
BlueCruise hardware on every truck
Every Fathom is built with the hardware for Ford's next-generation BlueCruise, with Apple Maps integration meant to smooth the handoff from on-ramp to off-ramp. To be precise, because this gets muddled elsewhere: the hardware is standard, but BlueCruise must be activated, and hands-free operation only works on the mapped segments Ford calls Blue Zones. Activation pricing for Fathom has not been announced.
Equipment that doesn't require a trim walk
A large touchscreen with navigation running natively on Apple Maps, a digital key that locks, unlocks, and starts the truck from a phone, Ford app remote control for charge status and select functions, and both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto — all standard.
Five seats and a frunk
Ford projects more passenger volume than a Toyota RAV4, which tells you the cabin is aimed at commuters as much as contractors. There is a front trunk. Official dimensions have not been released, but reported figures put the truck in Maverick territory despite the midsize label.
Built in Louisville
Fathom is assembled at Ford's Louisville Assembly Plant in Kentucky using a new process Ford calls the assembly tree. Ford is investing roughly $5 billion across the Louisville plant and BlueOval Battery Park in Michigan to stand up the Universal EV Platform.
