Ford Key Fob Battery Replacement: Which Battery and How to Change It

Posted at Fri, Oct 30, 2026 5:19 PM

Most Ford key fobs use a single 3-volt lithium coin battery, commonly a CR2450 in push-button-start fobs and a CR2032 in flip keys. To replace it, remove the key blade, open the case, swap in a new battery positive side up and snap the case closed. Changing the battery does not erase your fob's programming.

Ford key fob battery: quick answers

What battery does a Ford key fob take?

Ford key fobs use a 3-volt lithium coin battery. Many recent push-button-start (Intelligent Access) fobs take a CR2450, and Ford flip keys take a CR2032. Your owner's manual lists the exact battery for your vehicle.

How do I open a Ford key fob?

On a push-button-start fob, slide the release on the back and pull out the mechanical key blade, then twist a coin in the slot to separate the case. On a flip key, use a small flat-blade screwdriver to release the clip and remove the cover.

Will I need to reprogram my Ford key fob after changing the battery?

No. Replacing the battery does not erase the fob's programming. It should work as soon as the case is closed.

How do I start my Ford if the key fob battery is dead?

Place the fob in the backup slot and press the Start/Stop button with your foot on the brake. Depending on the model, the backup slot is in the center console or on the steering column.

How do I unlock my Ford with a dead key fob?

Remove the mechanical key blade from the fob and use it on the driver's door handle. On many Fords, the lock sits behind a small cover on the handle that the key blade releases.

How do I know my key fob battery is low?

The most common signs are a shorter unlocking range and buttons that need more than one press. Replacing the battery early prevents a dead fob when you need it most.

Which battery does my Ford key fob use?

The battery depends on the type of key you have. Here is a quick guide.

Key type Common battery How to open it
Push-button-start (Intelligent Access) fob CR2450 on many recent models Remove key blade, twist a coin in the slot
Flip key CR2032 Release the clip with a small screwdriver
Older fobs Varies by model and year See your owner's manual

Coin batteries are sold at most retail stores and by our Parts department. Match the number printed on your old battery exactly.

How to replace the battery in a push-button-start Ford key fob

Most recent Fords with push-button start use this process. It takes about two minutes.

  1. Slide the release on the back of the fob and pull out the mechanical key blade.
  2. Insert a coin into the slot that the blade leaves open and twist gently to separate the case.
  3. Note which side of the old battery faces up, then remove it.
  4. Insert the new battery positive (+) side up, holding it by the edges.
  5. Snap the case back together and reinstall the key blade.
  6. Test the lock and unlock buttons.

Do not wipe away the grease on the battery terminals inside the fob. It protects the contacts.

How to replace the battery in a Ford flip key

Ford flip keys open differently but are just as quick.

  1. Unfold the key blade.
  2. Use a small flat-blade screwdriver to release the clip and remove the cover.
  3. Gently pry out the old battery.
  4. Install the new CR2032 battery positive (+) side up.
  5. Reinstall the cover and test the buttons.

What to do if your Ford key fob dies

A dead fob will not leave you stranded. Every Ford Intelligent Access fob has a mechanical key blade, and the vehicle has a backup spot for starting.

  • To unlock: remove the key blade from the fob and use it in the lock on the driver's door handle.
  • To start: place the fob in the backup slot, press the brake and press Start/Stop.

The backup slot is in the center console on some models and on the steering column on others. Your owner's manual shows the exact location for your Ford.
