Ford Maintenance Schedule: What Your Ford Needs and When

Ford Maintenance Schedule: What Your Ford Needs and When

Posted at Fri, Oct 30, 2026 5:11 PM

Most modern Fords follow a schedule set by the Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor, with oil changes no later than every 10,000 miles or one year. Ford also calls for a tire rotation at every oil change, a cabin air filter about every 20,000 miles and an engine air filter about every 30,000 miles. Your owner's manual lists the exact intervals for your model.

Ford maintenance: quick answers

How often does a Ford need an oil change?

Follow the Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor, which tells you when service is due based on how you drive. Ford says not to exceed one year or 10,000 miles between oil changes.

How often should I rotate the tires on my Ford?

Ford recommends a tire rotation every time you get your oil changed. It is the simplest way to keep tires wearing evenly.

What does a Ford 30,000-mile service include?

On many Ford models, about 30,000 miles is when the engine air filter is due, along with the regular oil change, tire rotation and multi-point inspection. Your owner's manual lists the full service for your model.

What are special operating conditions?

Ford uses a shorter schedule for vehicles that tow regularly, idle for long periods, drive at low speeds for long distances or travel dusty or sandy roads. If that describes your driving, some services come due sooner.

When does a Ford need new spark plugs?

Many current Ford engines call for spark plugs at 100,000 miles under normal driving and at 60,000 miles for vehicles that tow or idle for long periods.

Do I have to service my Ford at a dealership to keep the warranty?

No. You can have maintenance done at any qualified shop, as long as it is performed on schedule and documented. A Ford dealership uses factory-trained technicians and genuine Ford and Motorcraft parts and keeps your service history in one place.

How the Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor works

The Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor tracks how your Ford is driven and the conditions it operates in, then calculates when your oil is due for a change. When oil life runs low, a message appears on your instrument cluster.

The monitor replaces a single fixed mileage interval with one that matches your driving. Whatever the monitor shows, Ford's limit is one year or 10,000 miles between oil changes. The monitor is reset after each oil change.

Typical Ford maintenance intervals

These are typical intervals from current Ford owner manuals. Intervals vary by model, engine and model year, so your owner's manual is the final word for your vehicle.

Service Normal driving Special operating conditions
Engine oil and filter As indicated by the Oil-Life Monitor, no more than 1 year or 10,000 miles Dusty or sandy roads: every 5,000 miles or 6 months
Tire rotation Every oil change Dusty or sandy roads: every 5,000 miles
Cabin air filter About every 20,000 miles Long idling or dusty roads: inspect and replace as needed
Engine air filter About every 30,000 miles Inspect and replace as needed with long idling or dusty roads
Brake fluid Every 3 years on many newer models Every 3 years on many newer models
Spark plugs About every 100,000 miles on many engines Towing or long idling: about every 60,000 miles
Automatic transmission fluid About every 150,000 miles Towing, long idling or dusty roads: about every 30,000 miles
Engine coolant Varies by model; many newer models first at 10 years or 200,000 miles Varies by model

Normal vs. special operating conditions

Most daily drivers follow the normal schedule. Your Ford falls under special operating conditions if you regularly:

  • Tow a trailer or use a car-top carrier.
  • Idle for long periods or drive at low speeds for long distances.
  • Drive on dusty, sandy or unpaved roads.

Trucks that pull boats, campers or work trailers, like a Maverick with the 4K Tow Package, are the most common example. If you are not sure which schedule fits, our service advisors can review how you drive and recommend the right one.

Ford maintenance milestones by mileage

It helps to know which services tend to come together:

  • Every oil change: oil and filter, tire rotation and a multi-point inspection.
  • About 20,000 miles: cabin air filter.
  • About 30,000 miles: engine air filter.
  • Every 3 years: brake fluid on many newer models.
  • About 100,000 miles: spark plugs on many engines under normal driving.
  • About 150,000 miles: automatic transmission fluid under normal driving.

Don't ignore warning lights

Your Ford's dashboard warning lights flag issues that can't wait for the next scheduled visit. If a light comes on and you are not sure what it means, our Ford Dashboard Symbols guide explains each one. A check-engine light means the vehicle has stored a fault code, and our technicians can read it and explain what it means.
